The International Awards for Liveable Communities(LivCom Awards) was launched in 1997 and is a World’s major Awards Competition focusing on International Best Practice regarding the management of the local environment and development. The objective of LivCom Awards is to develop and share International Best Practice, with the further objective of improving the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of ‘liveable communities’. Since 2007 the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) has collaborated with the LivCom Awards, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two Organizations.

The LivCom Awards was initiated by the International Federation of Park and Recreation Administration and is managed by the LivCom Committee, a UK Registered nonprofit distributing Association that is Limited by Guarantee. LivCom is non-political, embracing all nations and cultures, and over 70 countries have been represented within the Awards. Each year, communities that have met at the Finals of the LivCom Awards have exchanged Best Practice and practical experience and have joined forces to address mutual challenges. These partnerships have led to mutual technical advances and more effective use of resources, including finance, and the improvement of the quality of life within a community.

Since 2018, LivCom Awards has been promoted by a new Management Committee and a number of UN experts, officials and experienced local policy makers have joined the Independent Jury. Major adjustments have also been made with regards to the judging criteria and categories to draw on the global agenda for sustainable development. To contribute to the implementation of SDGs at the local level and their scaling up, the LivCom Committee has decided to hold the International LivCom Awards for SDG (LivCom SDG Awards) from 2022.

Calling for entries from local governments, the Whole City Award (also known as Nations in Bloom Award) has 5 population categories based on the size of the population of the cities and the entries are reviewed accordingly. Following strict requirements for evaluation criteria and presentations, the winning cities at the annual Finals are regarded as “the most liveable cities globally”.

The Environmentally Sustainable Project Award is open to the Public and Private Sectors and Partnerships of both. The objective of the Project Award is to encourage Developers to have the same environmental objectives as communities.

The Technology and Solution Award will be based on the theme of the annual technical conference held during the Finals. The Award aims to identify the best technologies and solutions for specific areas of urban environment and sustainable development, and the entry is open to individuals, institutions and local authorities.

It is important for any person with a responsibility for the local environment, political or technical, to be aware of Best Practice beyond that of their own country. Being aware of International Best Practice and participating in the LivCom SDG Awards provide opportunities to learn of good practices that can then be replicated and adapted to their local communities for better improving their quality of life and sustainable management of their resources.

The LivCom SDG Awards is a major forum in which International Best Practice may be observed and developed, and participation in the Awards is an investment in the future of a community.
